VRSTY COVER LIL NAS X’S “MONTERO (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME)” + YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS — LISTEN
New York City-based collective VRSTY (pronounced “Varsity“) — Joey Varela [vocals], Javy Dorrejo [bass], Chris Cody [drums], and Paul Gregory [guitar] — have released their cover of Lil Nas X’s groundbreaking smash hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”
“I remember hearing ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ for the first time and instantly thinking, ‘This song is perfect,'” says Joey Varela. “I made it a fun little challenge to try to cover it and keep it as close to the original as possible, but to also add my own spin on it. It ended up being really fun and now I’m left trying to figure out how I can get a stripper pole in my apartment that will take me to hell.”
VRSTY’s EP Cloud City is out now via Spinefarm Records and has tallied 2 million streams since its December release. The band (and EP) cross-pollinate metallic grooves with R&B vocal swagger on “Shameless” and “Massive,” the latter of which was the most played on SiriusXM’s Octane for two weeks in a row in late 2020. VRSTY also participated in the Octane Accelerator home concert series.
VRSTY are hard at work on their new album — their first for Spinefarm.
