Lyrical acrobat and one half of the rap duo Blackalicious, GIFT OF GAB, teamed up with NPR Music to premiere a new video for “The Gentrification Song”, the 5th track off his newest EP Rejoice! Rappers Are Rapping Again. Through the track, Gift of Gab hopes to shed a light on how gentrification is affecting people across the country, including personal friends and family. Gab explained exclusively to NPR, “I know people who are sleeping in their cars. This cab driver told me he was paying $1,300 a month for rent. He got a letter that told him in two months it would rise to $3,600 a month. And just witness all the tent cities all over the country popping up.”

NPR praised the track calling it “The Inner-City Blues America Deserves From Rap” and saying, “Instead of camouflaging his message in coded language, the Bay Area rapper leaves zero room for confusion with his plainspoken critique delivered with empathy over a classic beat.”

The inspiration for starting this Patreon campaign reaches all the way back to 2012. Five years ago, Gift of Gab began dialysis treatments after undergoing surgery for kidney failure. “This was something that completely changed my life and made me realize how important every moment we have on this Earth really is,” says Gab. The treatments have necessitated adjustments to his everyday life, making it difficult to be on the road as often as he would like.

I’ve realized that what’s important is to connect directly with YOU – my fans! I’ve teamed up with Patreon to offer something new and different that is going to be as fun and exciting for me as I hope it is for you… No labels – no middlemen – just the artist and the fans.”

Gab’s Patreon campaign will continually and consistently roll out new content including a brand new “Patreon-only” track each month as well as other exclusive content and rewards. The campaign will last one full year before culminating in a brand new album of all new material. Additionally, 10% of all proceeds will be donated directly to the National Kidney Foundation. “I want to thank all of my fans who have supported me and my music over the years and continue to do so.” says Gab, “Without all of you I couldn’t make all of this happen.”

Praised by All Music Guide as “one of the very finest MCs to ever pick up a microphone” and Pitchfork for his “astonishing verbal dexterity and enunciation”, Gift of Gab is best known for being one half of the Bay Area’s celebrated hip-hop duo Blackalicious. However, Gab has also had a long and prolific solo career that began with 2004’s album, 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Upand continued with 2008’s Escape 2 Mars and 2012’s The Next Logical Progression which featured many guest artists including Martin Luther, Zion I, George Clinton as well as his Quannum brothers Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker.

Gift of Gab’s EP Rejoice! Rappers are Rapping Again
