“…whatever you do, don’t let go of the name darkDark” – The Revue

“Lyrically ‘Save It’ is quite simple, allowing the lush instrumentation to take the lead, falling into place as another instrument in the rich symphony that James and Vincent create together” – mxdwn

“On their latest EP, the duo tackle the rawness of existence in such an uncertain era, while speaking to the intense emotions that something like a global pandemic can collectively inspire” – Exclaim!

July 31, 2020 (Los Angeles, CA) – darkDARK, the duo of Chris James and Genevieve Vincent shares their 5-song EP We forget when we’re apart. out now via Nettwerk.  The duo has created an ethereal, glitched-out, mantra-like EP that seamlessly pairs cinematic synths with modern pop.

We forget when we’re apart., a title inspired by the gently pulsating song “Back to the Start,” features two previously released tracks – first single “In Two” and the spacious, escapist “No Symmetry” – in addition to a remix by electronic artist and producer Giraffage.

To celebrate the EP release, the band worked with director Will Wernick and 3D and VFX Artist Jordan Rundle to create the official music video for “Save It,” a harmonic groove about unheard voices, amid the richly verdant trees and black canopies of a Pacific Northwest forest. When speaking to mxdwn, the duo said “we’ve always envisioned this song as taking place in the deep, haunting woods of the Pacific Northwest. In the video, the bird lives in two separate worlds at the same time. At the beginning of the video: The bright sun of the day and foggy dark of the evening. As it continues: The slow meandering path of the real world, and the hyper-fast and intentional path of its reality. While the bird’s flight might seem haphazard from the outside, through its eyes we see that it has direction.”

Speaking to Exclaim!, the duo adds, “we wrote this EP living in different states, so we imagined these shared ‘settings’ or ‘spaces’ where we could write together and create a cohesive sound for each song. When we started writing, we didn’t talk about what the songs were going to be about, but in sending them back and forth, we realized that we were both having the same feelings about different memories; disappointing someone you love, falling in love for the first time, starting over, feeling young and invincible, or out of place, are things we’ve both experienced. Sometimes when we go back to a memory it feels like a movie in our head, and we were kind of creating these vignettes so we could experience them together. Because we were apart during the making the EP, we would hang out in these imaginary spaces.”
The secret to their synchronicity lies in their work practice too. With Genevieve in Los Angeles and Chris in Austin, they wrote and mixed projects for four years before even meeting. Also, they have a very expansive DropBox, where they organize their ideas. That journey is a big part of the alchemy driving darkDARK.  One of them starts a track, and they pass it back and forth sometimes more than a dozen times, adding and subtracting elements until it hits an aural sweet spot.  Then, mixer Andrew Maury (Shawn Mendes, Lizzo, Post Malone) came in at the end to put some final touches on the tracks.

Conversely, when it comes to production, Chris is a self-described “maximalist” who is extremely attentive to detail.
